...ultimate theoretical sharp edge impossible to achieve?

Now that should get you thinking...

OK Ralph,

Here is my guess...

The ultimate sharp edge would have no ripples or scratches on it's edge. But we must use materials which have grit (no matter how fine) to remove the material from the edge. Therefore the edge we create will always have scratches and ripples.

The grain or the molecular structure limits the edge.
The edge will eventually reach a breaking point.

extremely sharp is too thin and fragile-- too strong an edge is too dull

We only make comprimises based on what is a "best average" for the tool use (mortising chisel vs. paring chisel)

The ultimate edge would be one molecule in thickness. However, an abrasive particle must also be at least one molecule in diameter thus preventing the ultimate edge.

The Ultimate edge would be where two converging planes meet and become of zero thickness As you need material for an edge, it has to be before this point is reached. The art of it is to get as close to this goal as possible.

I think Daddy gloves got there first so the points are yours tonight!
