I am building a Capitans style bed for my Daughter and I am not sure about the correct method for the drawer slides. The I figure I can go 2 ways with this so I would like some opinions on to which way to proceed.
The first way is to use this style of draw glides:
http://www.rocklerpro.com/product.cfm?page=1507

The other way I thought about going is to put a piece of wood under the draw and let it slide on the bottom of the draw or add some low friction tape to the bottom of the draw sides and put a catch at the back to stop it from coming completly out.

Let me have your thoughts on this?

If it were me, I would only use full extension draw glides. They're all I ever use.

My first thought is; how old is the daughter? Do you need to make them sturdy enough to act as steps? This would make a lot of difference with the draw construction and the type of runner or slide you need to use.

Even if it was for my adult daughter I would probably over design the drawers so they could be used as steps up into the bed. I know my grand-kids! This means 1/2" bottoms and 100# full extension slides either side mounted or bottom mounted to the drawer.

well to start my daughter is 9 years old. The bed is only 24 inches high. I did not think of full extenison slides, I will check them out. But what should be the weight limit for the slides? Clothing does not weigh alot.

Bert,
In my first reply I gave you my answer. I would use 100# slides. You are correct that clothes don't weigh much but kids can start adding a lot of stress to the drawer.

I understand that the bed is low but I also understand kids. They will get used as step stools or seats or ???

But I always tend to over engineer a project. :-?

Bert, first I couldn't get into Rocklerpro (my numbers wouldn't work).
I would use Larry's full extensions and
Chuck's 100# slides at the least.
I would also check out Donald's "D Lawless Hardware"
to compare prices. Right now a 24", 100#, full extension is $16.59
and free shipping for orders $50+. thanks Donald

Full extension, 75 or 100 pound. They're expensive, but they will last.
I buy mine from Rockler also.

I used the full extension 100 pounder with 1/2 baltic birch drawer construction. Built the bed low to begin with, plan on adding a riser as she grows, so she climbed right on up at two and a half years old. They weren't as expensive at Menards as the same brand elsewhere, so pass on the Rockler option.

I made sure I could swap ends so the drawers wouldn't open against the wall in a future arrangement. If your plans don't do that, suggest you include it.

Very Nice!!

I think it turned out very well and I am sure she is proud of her "big girl's" bed.
