1st quarter 2010 WWA contest

This will be our first contest for 2010. This idea popped into my mind several weeks ago. I truly believe Mango and Verna thought I had finally lost what little sanity I had. But to me it makes sense. Many of us have a little trouble getting into the shop this time of year. So let’s do something nice and simple that we can do at the kitchen table or in the basement. And we can also get some of our younger family members involved with this. The hardest part of this will be deciding what to construct. Be sure to look at the pictures to see what can be constructed: the chair with Snoopy was given to Verna as a gift.
To enter, just tell me that you are going to enter and I will PM you a special e-mail address for you to send me your entry pictures.
Thanks and have FUN!

A couple of questions...

Hand tools or non-powered tools... Can you use an eggbeater drill, for instance?

Any limitation on finishes?

Thanks

Egg-beater drill: That's a hand tool in my mind. Basically non-electric tools. Keeps it safer at the kitchen table.

Finishes: As long as we can tell that craft sticks have been used and how many. If you use paint or a thick finish, we need several in progress pictures.

Thanks.

Not sure what I'm going to make, but I wanted to make sure so I can design my entry accordingly. :D

Just an update on our 1st quarter contest.
We have 2 members signed up (Rapid Roger & John Boy), ready to go. I will send you the e-mail address in a few minutes for your submissions.

Here are a few websites that may give you some more ideas. Some of these are pretty simple, for the younger folks, and then there is the Eiffel Tower (which probably used more than 500 sticks).

Good Luck all and thanks,

To anybody who is participating in the contest and hasn't bought your sticks yet. I went to Michael's (chain craft store) to buy mine. They had 150 sticks in a plastic bag for $2.99, so to buy the full 500 sticks, it would have cost me over $12 incl tax. But...they had a box of 1,000 sticks for $3.99  Needless to say, I bought the box of 1,000 even though we are limited to 500 for this contest.

No affiliation with them either.

I went to Hobby Lobby and got 150 small sticks (3/8" x 4-1/2") for $1.99 and 75 larger ones (3/4" x 6") for $1.99 also. :)
I'm not sure if it is fair to mix and match sizes or not but, I'm going to. They are all "Craft Sticks"!! :D
I have $4.26 invested so far (I may have to go back for more) and about a gallon of Titebond II. ( Ha Ha Ha just joking about the glue)

Hate to break it to you, but the rules state only 3/8" X 4-1/2" only. Hope you haven't gotten too far on your project. All I've done so far is buy the sticks.

Yea, :x I got the word about using the wrong size craft sticks.
I'm sorry.    I'll scrap what I have and come up with another idea. Or, I,ll just start over and my project will just be a smaller scale. That is what I get for thinking "Out Side the Lines".
Rules were ment to be bent but, not broken. I have been known to put a 90 degree bend on some rules when I was racing.  Don't see why that wont work here too!   (JUST JOKING A LITTLE)

By the way, if YOU are reading this and are not entered in the contest.....Get in here and get started!!! It is alot of fun and you can quit scratching your back side and start scratchin your head again. :D

Good morning all.

We now have 3 entrants in the 1st quarter contest: John Boy, Rapid Roger and Wolfsdenwood. We can still use lots more of you to enter. It's not going to cost much (unless you buy the exotic craft sticks from South Africa, England, Sweden or Australia :D ) and it's going to take a little thinking. Just check the rules and let me know.

Thanks!

Here's some more info on the construction of the "Snoopy Chair", just as a bit of help to those who can't quite picture how it was made.

The back and the seat are 2 thicknesses of craft sticks edge-glued and laminated together. The front legs are four thicknesses laminated, and the rear legs are 3 thicknesses edge-glued and laminated.

The arm pieces could easily be made from the smaller sticks edge-glued and laminated (since these are not the correct size of craft sticks for this contest).

The cross piece between the front legs is "mortised" into the legs; i.e. he planned it so he could put the cross piece in between two pieces of craft sticks.

The neighbor who made this for me, spends his summers at a "cabin" on a lake in Michigan and he sits for hours making his popsicle stick creations. No power tools--just hand powered saws, lots of glue, Exacto knives and sand paper.

Hope this helps.

Well, I just e-mailed my entry in this morning! I don't call myself Rapid Roger for nothing! :D
If I read the rules right (and I think I do this time  ) you still have until March 1st to get yours done. Plenty of time yet to get started on your project. :) So much time in fact that I may just start another entry (no rule about that!) :D
We have 2 weekends left in January and 4 in Febuary not to mention evenings when there is nothing on TV (which is most evenings these days)
So, put you name in the hat and warm up the glue amd get started!! :P

OK, Guys and Girls.......we have 28 days left for you to make something out of Popsicle Sticks (a.k.a. Craft Sticks).

We really would love it if you were able to involve your children, grandkids, shop helpers, or neighbor's kids, but hey, we'd love it if you make a project by yourself, too :D . This is a fun project, and we're really looking forward to having a bunch of entries.

It's not too late to start. Just send Chance or I a PM, or an e-mail, or just post here to say you want to enter.

Does it count that I have finally got a chance to buy the craft sticks?

I am so disappointed in myself on this one. . . . . .
