Going to redo the kitchen, somewhat. New floor, granite countertops and cabinet doors. The look we want is a white slab. Cut out a piece of 3/4" MDF and routed an edge of the largest door as a test. SWMBO picked it up as I was taking the hinges off the existing unit and commented on the weight. It never got hung. What is the best way to get a stable paintable slab door? We were hoping to use the existing hinges/hardware but am very leary of screws in MDF.

Thanks for all input.

Drawer fronts are a different issue. Those fronts are integral to the drawer box, and not removable. I am still chewing on those.

have you considered hollowing out the backs of the doors to lighten them?
There is also lighter-weight MDF
No matter what you choose you can use confirmat pilots/screws and they will hold in the edges of the MDF

I'm sure the more experienced folks here with chime in; these are just my "it's 6:30, I don't have to work today and I haven't yet had my cup of tea thoughts"....I've not yet renovated any cabinets and I sure hope things work out for you

Frank, there is a place in Shirley, Indiana that sells "seconds" cabinet doors. Take your measurements to him and he will give you the closest size available. I was able to get all new birch doors for under $300 for my kitchen.

You can also get drawer fronts from him.

PM me if you want me to get in touch with the friend who gave me his telephone number.

Verna

P.S. The "seconds" are ones that may have some different grain patterns going through them, ones that may have not been what the customer expected, etc. Nothing that would detract from the looks of the doors.

(edited because I keep forgetting your name is Frank  )

I would rather use Batic birch myself, very stable, cuts better, and takes screws with no problem. And, lighter weight.

What kind of hinges?

If they are "euro" hinges you wont have a problem as you are screwing into the face of the MDf.

MDF is a very versatile product, it does not like fixings in its edges, nor does it enjoy finishes there either. But with careful predrilling you can successfully screw into the end grain. and with a bit of filler before you finish you can have good looking edges too.

As with everything else in life it is horses for courses. Choose your horse wisely!

Oh if you do use MDF, try to get MR MDF (moisture resistent) Mdf is not as bad as chipboard but the less absorbtion the better.

Good luck!

Eric

MDF comes in a light weight version. check with your local supplier. Not the big box suppliers.

Frank:

I've got it!!!! http://www.thedoorstore.net/default.htm

BUT, they truly are only open from 4 pm to 7 pm on Tuesdays only. In addition to a store in Shirley, IN, there is another store in Columbia City, IN, too.

Well, worth it. I have the Birch Shaker style.

It looks like I need to check out their pedestals for a kitchen table.
