I have a friend that is building his own guitar and is having a problem trying to make the curve top. I told him I would see if I could get some of our experts to give him some advise. I have his email address if you would like to contact him directly. I gave him the forum address and I think we there is a good chance we could be getting a new member. He is a Baptist preacher and is very interested in woodworking. Thanks to anyone that can help him.

No offense to the great wealth of resource we have on our board, but I think one of the best available online is Frets.com.

I believe they have a forum as well.

Another big name is Stewart-MacDonald.

I've not used either of these as I'm not a luthier, but I've seen them referenced by knowledgeable sources.

Generally the tops are curved with radius planes, but that is the extent of my experience.

He would certainly be a welcome addition to our forum none-the-less!

Hey Don, hows that bowl? :D

Just built a couple of guitars myself. I took a class at Woodcraft.

Here's a link to the pictures I took during the build.

I forget if it's a 25' radius on the back and a 30' radius on the front or the other way around.

The way you do this is you curve the braces and use a press like this

Image

The dowels are bent to put the preasure on and the bottom of the press has the radius in the bottom. When it's all dry you have the correct radius.

I'm no expert at this but I did go through the motions. If your friend has any questions I'll be happy to answer the ones I can.

Thanks Jeff: I'll PM you and give you his e-mail address and you can contact him, he will probably pick your mind on the build. He has some arch in it now that he just hogged out the inside and I'm not sure how he did the outside, but I guess he would like a bit of greater arch.
The bowl is still looking great and I can tell you it is treasured. My granddaughter insists when I depart this earth she wants it.
