Having posted my question about rust on my Clifton 400 Shoulder Rebate Plane on both here and the British forum I frequent i was gobsmaked to recieve the following post from Matthew Platt who runs a small but very good fine tool company here in the UK called Workshop Heaven

Hi Ray,

Looks like that little chap's feeling a bit sorry for himself.

http://workshopheaven.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?&rnd=5323763&rrc=N&affl=&act=&aff=&pg=prod&ref=STRRG250&cat=ST&catstr=HOME:Shield+Technology:ST

This is the stuff I'd recommend. You just rub it on and agitate it for a minute or two then wipe it and the rust off with a clean rag. It is biodegradable, pH neutral and remarkably effective. The same company (from Grimsby) also do a concentrated solution that you can submerge rusty items in for an hour or so and they come out like new, but for a touch of surface rust like that the gel will be fine.

You may be left with a feint shadow where it has gone a little deeper but the powdery rust on the registration surfaces will disappear completely.

If you'd like to try it, let me know your address and I'll pop a sample in the post to you.

Cheers,

Matthew

When you consider how small a tool it is any sample is going to be enough to sort out the problem.

Consider this as well. I've visited Matthew's Website and drooled over the lovely tools but I've never purchased anything from him!.......yet

Guess where I'll be looking first for my next fine tool purchase.......

That is a good story. It should happen more often. That man, for the cost of a few cents, has probably bought a customer for life.
That used to be the best advertizing avaliable and, it still is. :-D

Good on him!

Customer for life indeed.

The power of the internet, spreading kindness worldwide, eh?

I'm aware of a couple of gents on this side of the pond that have extended similar generosities; Joel Moskowitz and Rob Lee.

As an aside we have a product here with the same qualities called Evaporust. I haven't used (or needed) it yet, but it comes highly recommended by some highly respected hand tool users.

Sounds like Evaporust in gel form.

I'd like some of that. :-D

He does export Jeff.

My sample arrived yesterday and I also purchased from him some of this

http://workshopheaven.com/cgi-bin/cp-app.cgi?usr=51F7817194&rnd=9742191&rrc=N&affl=&cip=90.200.69.81&act=BdpTnPodmuB08rNlWohl4Xg%3D&aff=&pg=prod&ref=STMGU125&cat=Corrosion&catstr=HOME:Crafts:Corrosion

to keep it in good condition after the job is done.

I'm looking forward to the weekend when I hope to have a go with the stuff.

Rescued my 400 yesterday using Restore Rust Remover Gel.

Here's the initial equipment:
Image

Disposable Gloves, Non scratch scouring pad, Restore Rust Remover Gel and Metal Guard Ultra Anti Rust Solution to protect the cleaned plane from further damage.

Took rather longer than Matthew indicated .... scrubbing the plane with the non scratch scourer and Restore Gel:

The results with direct Before and After Views.

After:

Sadly the worst of the rust had pitted a little too deep for the gel to cope with.... but still a massive improvement.

After the treatment the plane was washed in water and then immediately dried. Matthew suggested using a hot air gun but I used an optical frame heater because I had one handy.

Not so spectacular as Jeff's Evaporust trial on the block plane but the finish is nowhere near so matt.
I'm very pleased with the results although I might have one more go at the deep pitting again. If I do and manage to improve it I'll let you know.

Ray

PS Just noticed that the 'Before' pictures look rather shinier than the 'After'. This is because I took the 'After' photos outside this morning whereas the 'Before' were taken indoors by flash.
