These are my biggest bowls. They are turned out of fir drops I had laying around. Turning something this big had some problems. The first bowl is 30 1/2" diameter. The grain on one side of the bowl is much tighter than the other side. After glueing and rough rounding, I mounted it on the outboard attachment I have on my lathe and turned it on. My 400 lb. lathe started jumping across the floor till I shut it off. I had to screw pieces of metal to the back (like tire weights) till I had it balanced. I finished one side then flipped it and did the same thing to the other side (although it took less weights this time).
The next bowl is 23" dia. and the small bowl is 17" dia.

I'm in the same boat as LB. I have too many hobbies already. I'm not sure I can afford to be sucked into turning. I hear it turns into a black hole - a good black hole but still a black hole.

Zulu,

I think this one was about 22"

I love turning large platters but I don't have any luck selling them around here. I usually give them away as gifts.

Love yours. What are you turning on?

I don't turn things but your post reminded me of a trip to Black Mountain in North Carolina where I saw the biggest turnings ever. An old man had a shop there and I could not believe the size of the things in the store. He showed me around and he has a lathe that he says came off a World War II battleship. It was mounted on rails that looked something like railroad tracks as I recall and he described to me the changes he had made to run it at very, very low rpm's to turn huge pieces. It was truly amazing, that was some years ago and I don't know if he is still there or not but if anyone is up that way it would be worthwhile to take a look.

A post 6" X 6" X10' for a restoration job. I made a lathe bed that held my lathe plus had a 8' extension. It was anchored to an old concrete foundation in my yard that once supported another house. On the first attempt the post tore itself from the drive center. I was doing the finish cuts when it happened and had the rpms clicking right along. Seeing that 10' 6" X 6" spinning end-for-end above my head was certainly motivation to make sure I didn't experience the same result on the second try.

Nailer and lawrence,
Your stuff looks better than mine. Mine was bouncing around enough to make a nice finish hard. Looks like you were using some nice wood too.
I'm using a Delta Top Turn with a bed extension and outboard attachment. the biggest it can hold is 32" on the outboard.

Anders,
That is some lathe. It would be fun to turn something like that.
Thanks for the link.

Very nice work!

The largest I've turned is this maple bowl at 17x6 inches.

Sometimes hard to find a practical use for the really big ones, but they sure are fun to do.....
