Thought I forgot, didn't you?

I glued up the carcass for one of the dressers yesterday, and I have everything cut out for the second one today.

well... it's LOML and my anniversary this Wed so I am making a small elephant engraving for her (she loves elephants)

I am also designing a set of 8 mesquite placemats. I haven't completely tied down the process yet, but I'd like to come up with a thin, heat resistant, slide resistant, warp resistant sandwich that will look good. My thinking is that it will probably end up being a sandwich of (from bottom to top

cork (.8 mm- very thin stuff)
baltic birch (1/8 or 3/16 material... thin but not too thin that it will warp
top layer of veneer- probably mesquite. I'll then carve the piece on the CW and the birch (in theory) will show through the mesquite after it has been carved... I hope to use some traditional "chip carving" style patterns but do not want to go overboard-- our dinner service is this one and is quite fussy on its own so I'd probably leave the placemats fairly plain

Finishing the bathroom redo, hopefully.

This has turned into quite a job. I knew there was water damage to the plywood subfloor, but before we tore it out last Sunday (has it been just a week????), I had no idea how extensive the damage was.

There were two 3/4" subfloors with a 1/8" subfloor on top. IF there hadn't been two layers of 3/4" plywood, that floor would have caved in a long time ago!!!

So, we tore it out to the floor joists, removing the old cast iron tub (dated 4/12/62 on the bottom--a year younger than I thought it would be).

So, I have a new acrylic tub and wall kit that honestly requires no caulking. New 1.7 gallon toilet--so much better than the old one.

A new exhaust fan (it just looks like a dome light--who would have guessed it was an exhaust fan???) with piping going to the outside gable with a vent. I actually have no steam in the bathroom when I finish with my normal hot shower--WOW---I didn't know that was possible!!!

A new warm floor--there obviously was a lot of air leaking up from the crawl space with the old damaged floor. We put two 3/4" layers of plywood down (the top one is guaranteed waterproof for the life of the plywood.....I hope not to have to check that one out!!!!), to meet with the flooring to the hallway. Very sturdy floor!!

The only woodworking will be when I start putting the baseboard and quarter-round down this afternoon. Then I can go back to working on the baseboard, quarter-round and door trim for the living room and hallway.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for this project...FINALLY!!!!

I did finally get one of the draws done for mine!

I just finished one of the face frames for one of the night stands.

Dude I would LOVE to see some progress photos of that process. I am doing stapless on my Freedom 17 but I am always looking to learn new and more efficient ways to stapless build.

Working on breathing life back into this computer. It's older than Methuselah's mother and it's finally getting to the point that it doesn't like to get up in the morning. I built it back in the fossil record (2001) so for a computer that's pretty old. Had to get out the paddles and a crash cart but she's up and running (for now). Why does this stuff happen when you don't have a job? :D

Hey Larry,

I've been working on some bentwood serving trays. They're sort of like shaker bentwood boxes. The first set has been a learning experience, but I'm willing to put my name on 6 of the first 7 that I've made.

Well lets see,

I started on a router table/outfeed table with storage underneath.

I finished some cabinets for more storage and decided on raising my dust collection unit off the ground so to put the chip collector under it.
It will save me about 10 square feet. Which is where I will put the drill press.

Will continue next weekend as well.

Thanks,

James

grumble... grumble....

well I'm not real pleased with the way the elephant turned out....

Image
as LOML put it... (she knew I wan't happy).... you can do it again if you like and not make it "rustic"

sure, (says I) but do you understand that I made this out of zebrawood and ebony? (she knows what these woods cost)

"well I like it just fine like it is then!" she says

The elephant was carved out and then I used inlace turquoise and epoxy to fill the carving and then sanded it level. The epoxy had a bubble or two in it which I filled with more epoxy and inlace but you can see where the patches are (they are very very tiny, but I can see them) The ebony edging I roughed up with a block plane and though I like the look, I would do it differently next time....

We also spent almost 6 hours pulling all the sashes off the windows and then cleaning out the casements, dry lubing the sashes and mechanisms, ordering replacement parts for the tilt locks that have broken and cleaning (inside and out) all the windows.... I don't think the windows have been properly cleaned (the casements) since the house was made 13 years ago...we've washed the windows every quarter or so, but not removed the sashes and done them properly up till now.

They ride and look great now... but LOML and I are TIRED!!

I think I'll give the elephant another try tonight/tomorrow...
