Frank

I've been using hand planes to do all of my initial jointing. I've been using the Veritas BU jointer for several years and it's a great tool. I think I like the simplicity of the BU configuration - it's really easy to set up. Lee Valley's quality is every bit as good as LN - you wouldn't be disappointed.

I use 2 planes for flattening. The first approach is with an old Stanley #5 that has a cambered blade and aggressive cut. I take traverse cuts (almost completely cross grain) to quickly remove the major hills, twists, etc. Then comes the jointer to bring final flatness across the entire surface of the board. Here's some photos of the process on some walnut.

Just be forewarned -- you're heading down the slippery slope!

Tom

Sorry about that Gene - my technique for handling pictures has much room for improvement - I think I was successful with the edit though.

Hmmm . .. learn something new every day! I didn't realize that was what made the page wide.

In other news, I went to the Lie-Nielsen tool event in Austin today. As always, there was a bunch of drool to clean up.

However, Frank, after looking at some of the LN tools, it reaffirmed my strong belief in Veritas. I looked at the LN low angle jointer and certainly like the Veritas better. It has a much easier mechanism for adjusting the throat and also has a stop to keep from smacking the iron. Also saw a big difference between the LN and Veritas spoke shaves. Even a simple device like that has a big difference. The Veritas has blade depth adjusters that the LN lacks.

Still, I wouldn't have refused anything they had there. In particular, I'd love to have their tongue and groove plane!

Great advice and great pics Tom. I'm sold and about to buy. I just got a late Christmas gift from my FIL. A check for $300 :D That should cover the plane and shipping. 8)

Thanks again for all the tips and suggestions, and I'll still be keeping my eye out for a good stanley #7 or 8. I'm liking planes more every day.
