Frank - this one is for you! Thought about putting this in your thread, but thought I'd break it out.

There is a book called Planecraft that I highly recommend reading if you use hand planes. It was originally published in 1934 by Hampton & Clifford (Clifford planes).

Ultimately, it is a very clever advertisement for Clifford planes. However, they present some techniques that were still fresh before the transition to power tools.

In this book I learned a number of techniques that have changed my hand planing. Specifically, their explanation of edge jointing boards is one I've adopted and found very effective. Previously I had been taught methods by very accomplished woodworkers who built furniture for the White House. However, I could never get their methods to work and resorted to the Planecraft method.

You can get a copy through Woodcraft for $14.

I'm just about to head out for lunch, I think I'll swing by WC and see if they have it in stock. Thanks for the tip. 8)

Nice score!!

If you plan to use hand planes, that is 10 bucks well spent. It is a shame to invest hundred$$ in hand planes and not be able to harness their utility.

Enjoy!!

Sorry to hear that Gene. If it make you feel better, the one down the street from my office is also the closest WC to Torrington WY where the wife lives.

Hey Rockfish,
Dove into the book this weekend and learned a LOT! It's not the easiest read and you can really tell that they are pushing their product, but it's still great information.

Thanks again.
