I made this one at the same time as the butternut end table.

This is for my ex-neighbor who is retired and about to move down to Florida. He has a floor cabinet/wine refrigerator down there, and he wanted something to hang above it that would hold wine glasses. I did a little google images searching and found something like this. It's basically a small upper kitchen cabinet with a top.

I figured a french cleat is the way to hang this thing.

Image

And due to the dimensions and what it's holding, I want to be extra sure it doesn't come off the wall, so I'm going to have him send some screws through the back once he hangs it on the cleat. In order to do that, I'm leaving the top unattached. So I added a few blocks to the underside to have it set in the box snugly.

Image

And you may notice my signature. This is new. I have a friend who does hand carved rubber stamps. He made one for me in exchange for helping him with some display stands.

Image

Oh yeah, the finish. Yes, it's stained (merlot dye stain) . . . no, I wouldn't have stained it if it was mine. But he wanted it to approximately match the refrigerator. Since that was down if FL, all we could do was go by a picture. He understands that it won't match exactly. I did the wash coat of shellac first, then the stain. Then a BLO/Poly/Mineral Spirits wipe on finish.

Got it done just in time. He leaves tomorrow!

BTW, this is the project that pummeled me with two of my 3 kickbacks. I'm ready for it to go away!

BEautiful work. Really like the colour too.

What does your friend normally charge for hand carved rubber stamps, if I may ask?

I was about to say I have no idea what he charges . . . but then I remembered he has an Etsy shop:

http://www.etsy.com/shop/jackbear

Looks like $25 for a custom portrait . . . $15 for a monogram? Actual price varies according the complexity . . . plus shipping (according to his site).

Brian, I really, really like this project!!! I love the storage for the wine glasses!!!

Now, with the rubber stamp imprint....when did you stamp your signature on the piece? Before the shellac? After the shellac? After the stain????

I've often thought about using a rubber stamp for my signature, but I'm really not sure exactly when to use it in the finishing process so it doesn't smear.

Also, what kind of ink did you use?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Verna

I did the stamp after the shellac . . . well, after I sanded the shellac. I too wondered about a stamp as a signature. My friend recommended using an ink called Stazon. You can find it at the big box hobby stores. I think it's a solvent based ink that dries fairly well. I was worried about using a wipe on finish on top of it. But it worked fine. No running or smears or anything.

So yeah, I'm happy with it. I bought brown, black and a white opaque ink. The black seems to work the best. But I may try the white on walnut whenever I use it next.

I have tried to sign a piece with ballpoint, Sharpie and led pencil before doing the shellac and, IT DONT WORK!!! Even with spray on shellac the ink just runs and smears. I have started to wait until all the finish is on before making my mark and that isn't always a good thing either. guess I'll get me a wood burner. :D

Very nice, I really like the color. Can you give us your finish scheduled?

That is just beautiful... and of course your finish and signature are just cherries on top of such a nice piece... and I love cherries!

Nice job

Sure . . .

#1 Cut shellac (50/50 mix of Zinnser seal coat with alcohol)
Sanded that thoroughly to 220, 320 or 400 on the end grain
Stained with General Finishes Merlot Dye Stain.
2 or 3 coats of BLO/Gloss Poly/Mineral Spirits (1/3 each)
Then 2 or 3 coats of just Poly/Mineral spirits (50/50 . . . wipe on)

I think the poly I've been using is a little old . . . I need to get some new stuff.
