On behalf of Mango and Lawrence ,I would like to thank you all for taking the time to enter this year competition.
It was difficult to judge as we have two ties but you all did well. Each of you had their own design and is a winner in one way.Looks like you all have plenty of Cherry wood around
So First place is Bill .His design impressed the judges .Well made and presented and the proportions are just right. The finish came out very nice.
See ""
Second place we have a tie between Jeff and Roger. This was a difficult decision as we like them both so you two share the second prize.
This is Jeffs work below. The joinery is good and we like the overall design . Nice clear finish.
See ""
Rogers design is also different .Lots of thoughts went in that and also a fair amount of work. The finish came out nice.
See ""
Third place goes to Verna. She tried very hard and even incorporated some scrollsaw work .We like the design, the consruction is good and we liked the finish.
See ""
So there you are and a big thanks to Mango and Lawrence for taking the time for scatching thier heads deciding with me who is the winner but in the end you are all winners.
Mango offered the winner a prize.
Lawrence also has something for the winner.
Thanks once again to you all.
Have Fun

Congratulations to all! It was a very good contest and all the entrants were VERY close-- I really enjoyed the "in progress" picks and think it would be awesome if the contestants all posted their pics as they are GREAT and show how skilled all of them are (very) Once again, congratulations and thank you to all that entered.
The prize I am giving is inbound (shipping) right now so may take a little bit to get in. In the meantime, I'll give a little hint as to what it is--
(one possible) origin of which was referenced by President Bartlett in the West Wing episode "The women of Qumar"
Winner of a popular magazine's 2009 "best new tools"
Available only from Rockler, lee valley and the manufacturer... currently out of stock at rockler and lee valley
Who can figure out what it is?

A BIG THANK YOU to Francois for getting this contest started and to Mango and Lawrence for being judges.
As much as it hurts me to say this...Bill did deserve to take first!
The irony of both our magazine racks being close to the same with the triangle theme still just kills me!!!
I had no idea what he was up to design wise and, he didn't know about my design either!! (I would like to say "great minds run in the same channel" but, that would be streaching the quote some. )
I really like the simple design of Jeff's rack too and Verna is really getting good at box joints as well. I considered doing some scroll work on whatever I came up with when I first started to design mine. Now I wish I had followed through.
Again a big thank you and I'm ready to do another project like this anytime.
Rog
PS. Is there only 4 entrys? If not, I sure would like to see the others too. _________________ Dont badmouth no strangers, they just friends you aint met yet.

Thank you Francois, Mango and Lawrence for taking the time to organize and judge this contest.
I like things about all of them. Maybe someday I will take a little time and use parts from all of them and make another.
Again thank you,

As the Roger said thanks to all that made this possible.
And I agree that Bill's is the best, however I don't feel that mine was better that Verna's. I really like hers.
I have to thank Francios as I've needed these for quite sometime now and this made me do it. I built 20 of them and only 3 are still empty.

First, thanks to Francois, Lawrence and Mango for the contest--you guys have went way over and above to help with the contest. THANKS!!!!
Congrats, Bill!!! You did great!!! Roger and Jeff--fantastic!!!!!
I had fun, I challenged myself, and one of the few times that I have designed, taken rough-sawn lumber, planed, jointed, and finished the project. I can honestly say that this magazine rack took me out of my comfort zone, that is until I got to the scrolling part
Verna
P. S. Sorry it took so long for me to respond today--while I love my tall hard maple tree and my even taller Pin Oak tree......taking care of the fallen leaves sure takes a lot of work!!!! The 20' x 40' garden now has approximately 18" thick of mulched maple leaves in it, and there are twenty 39-gallon bags of oak leaves at the street ready for the city to take them and compost them.....I'm tired. |

Well!!! Thank you, Lawerence and Mango! I didn't enter this contest to get a prize, I just enjoy streaching my imagation and skills and seeing what lines of thought and skills other folks have.
Competiton is the root of getting better at any endevor. Business, sports or hobbys all need to have a reason to go the extra mile and that is found in compition.
Besides, I had a BLAST doing it!!!
