I am making a set of cherry candle sticks and I have a question about finishing them. What are some of the finishes that everyone else uses on turnings. I have only finished the pens I make with sellac, so I am not sure where to go from here.

Both for pens and just about anything else, I've found that a good base of Maloof's Oil/Wax, applied at low speed and allowed to soak in for a few mintes really helps to bring out the best of any wood. I then take it up to a high speed and buff it out, and add a few coats of friction polish.

Cherry loves oil. You should consider thinning the first coat if you're doing linseed - recommended, because it contributes color - or use something like the WATCO oil, or other folks' "Danish" oil as your base, followed by an undiluted build coat or or two, depending on how deep you want it to look.

If you let the linseed cure you can do a shellac polish that looks great.
