So, have you ever bought a reconditioned tool? If so, were you happy with the results?

Vote at the quick poll at my blog.... I'm considering a few reconditioned tools myself.

It depends on what you call reconditioned. If you buy it from a big box store and it says "reconditioned" most likely it isn't. At least that's been my experience.

If your thinking of a reconditioned drill, I'd go with a new one. If it's a hammer, get the reconditioned one. :D

Seriously, I'd stay away from reconditioned electronics.

BTW I have bought a lot of stuff from the clearance table at HD with mixed results.

Well, I spent about 4 years in one of our "storerooms" at work where we distributed telecommunications equipment for use within our company. We even had the opportunity to tour some of our reconditioned vendor's facilities.

I'll tell you, now I do ask for the reconditioned telephones because they have the same warranty as the new ones, at a 33% savings. Also, it was neat to see how well they were cleaned, the testing involved, and the new packaging they were put in.

With all of the electronic equipment in that storeroom, I found the reconditioned equipment was repaired to a higher standard than the original equipment was made. Yes, hard to believe, but think about it. The technicians had to go through everything in the equipment to find all of the problems with it, rather than just make sure it turned on.

So, reconditioned is OK with me, and yes, I have purchased reconditioned tools for the workshop.........especially those antique planes

I certainly buy 'Old' whenever I get the chance. Certainly when it comes to hand tools. The 'reconditioning' is then down to me.
I suspect that I often get, for eg Planes, going better than the've been in their whole lives.
