Hey guys,

While digging into my Father's Navy background, I've come up with some old patches of his. He was a PO-3 Aviation Machinest Mate assigned as a flight engineer on PBM-3D Mariners assigned to VP-MS-2 in the mid 40's. I have his old squadron patch, which is a pretty rare find in and of it'self as the unit was only in existance for a few years.

The patch I'm trying to ID though is a large yellow N with small wings on each side of the letter. It's about the size of a HS Letter, but he never attended a HS with the letter N. Could this be a Navy patch of some kind?

I've got the patches drying today, (washed them last night), and I'll get them scanned in tonight. I'll try to get an email out to them tomorrow.

Frank,

Found some info here. Perhaps you could use this a starting point in your search. I didn't find any patch emblem described as a "N" with wings.

Good Luck,

It's often very difficult or impossible to track down any history on stuff like this, since squadrons are free to design and purchase "unofficial" patches, etc. at their discretion. I have a belt buckle, for example, for a squadron I was with while deployed in Japan in the late '70's. Only 127 were ever made, one for each of us. Sometimes the only way is to locate a former member of that organization and query them about it. Good luck with your hunt. :-D

Yup, and that tradition still continues... I have a few similar items (some of which arn't fit to post on a family forum)

good luck with your search

Thanks guys, and Nailer, I've spent a good bit of time on that site already, and have even established contact with the site's owner/admin. I'm planning to send him many of the photo's I've been scanning in, starting with these patches. Keep an eye on that site on the VP-MS-2 page for stuff from my Dad's personal collection.

Thanks again, and the search continues.
