About 11 years ago, I coached youth basketball. I had a team of teenagers who knew the game and we did fairly well...

Last night, I held my first practice for my son's basketball team... and it looks as if it will be a long season. I have a bunch of kids who don't know the rules of the game at the age of 11 - 12... so, some of my practice will be dedicated to running basketball 101...

Then, for some reason, they don't want to run back on defense... they kind of walk down the floor...

Finally, they all believe they are three point shooters, but none can hit from behind the arc...

So, it looks as if we have our work cut out for us....

I've checked out Coaching Basketball for Dummies.. I think that might be my first best step....

Yeah, it seems like you have a lot on your plate there.

I'm sure it will be very rewarding to have an impact in the lives of these kids and to see some of those bad habits start changing.

Good luck!

Tom, I know you can do it!!! As Lawrence said, watch "Hoosiers" because it is based on a true Milan, IN underachieving team.

As you well know, give the kids "educational" info based in electronic media and they'll pay better attention. But, it's great to have them put their electronic toys away and actually play a physical game!!

Thanks for helping the next generation enjoy and play a great game!!!

I bought that book when I coached my daughters in basketball. I played b-ball all of my life including a short career in high school, but it had a lot of the fundamentals that I took for granted.

As far as them not getting back on defense, wind sprints worked well when I was in high school, but alas, this is rec ball I'm sure, so that sort of discipline won't be tolerated.

Do you actually play with them during practice? If so, make sure you're the first one back on defense and them give them grief about the "old man" beating them downcourt. Might work. :)

I could never figure out which stick to use in basketball.

You only use a stick on the kids who won't get back on defense. :D Just kidding :)

Here's wishing you and your team lots of luck. I'm getting tired just thinking about running up and down that court.

A 2 x 2 of oak about 30" long works fairly well.

When the daughter started playing ball in middle school, my wife suggested that I begin to attend the games in spite of my one and a half jobs. After the first year I took a trainer's taping course and began doing the team's repairs and prevention. After all, I was in the roadside blood and gore business, seemed a logical extension! Did it through the final tournament elimination her senior year, and don't regret it.

The girls may not hustle, but the team will as it forms. They're pretty tough on each other, which is why coaches can afford to be good guys and offer encouragement rather than criticism. My daughter was always a problem for the coach, because she's deaf in one ear. He'd shout out a play or point of coaching, then realize that she had literally turned a deaf ear to the bench. Fortunately, as a center, she didn't do much ball-handling, so she made it a practice to look at the bench and lip read every time they changed ends. Couldn't turn the whole body without stumbling, of course.
