Haiku is really insanely easy.

It's a Japanese poetry form where you are working with syllables...

The First line has five
The middle pushes seven
And ends with five more.

Hey, that's a Haiku in itself...

Now, the tough part is to make it interesting and read like a sentence... that's when you've entered Haiku Nirvana.... :D

Maybe later on

I didn't get it either, so I googled it. Still don't think I get it, but at least I understand the theory behind it.

Verna - close but no
cigar. Six syllables in
that first line - almost!

Hey Tom,

Interesting yes, but actually, most Haiku are not read as sentences. Traditionally, there is a break between lines two and three, where the reader is called upon to personally consider the relation of the third line to the other two. In short, it has a sort of challenging, non sequiter quality that engages the reader. Poor Haiku can thus be either too simplistic, or too off the wall weird.

Because most Japanese words are polysyllabic, and convey more complex meanings that English words. The aim of Japanese Haiku seems to be, to try to say more, with less. Brevity and depth are the keys.

Tom

Hey where is AL? I'll bet he has some good examples of woodworking Haiku.

Well the Pirate went kayaking last night and came up with a haiku of his own. It even follows what Tom said.

"Shore of Autum hue,
Straining, I paddle upwind,

Gulk....Swallowed a bug."

Well, that's a Pirate for you.

Hey Frank,

Well done!

You even used another traditional element; the inclusion of a seasonal reference.

Bravo!

Tom

Hey Tom,

Well, like my paternal grandfather would have said,

"Yeah, well that, and two bits will get you a cup of coffee."

Hey Tom,

Let's just say he was more prosaic than poetic.

Thanks Tom, this is really kind of fun. Working in the shop or paddleing on the lake, or even on those long drives to WY, I have lots of time to think about things. Kind of a fun way to pass the time.
