Well, this cold spell (OK - I know - 30 degrees is balmy to some of my pals and gals here but ...) it's all but unbearable out in the shop until mid afternoon when the wood stove finally gets the temps up to where I can stay out there for more than an hour or so.

So ...

Decided some physical activity would be in order and broke down and (wait for it) ... decided to do some much needed cleanup-straighten up-fly right kinda stuff.

Now Of course few people here are as hard core wood hoarders as I am by any means. Meaning over the past few years I've amassed a huge stockpile of off cuts, thin rips (well I might need that for a shelf edging someday), so on and so forth. No doubt you get the point.

Amazingly I think I managed to 1) reclaim about 5% of the space in my shop and 2) will be able to keep the stove fired up for a few days just from all this scrap I managed to part with. Jigs I made for some long ago project that I don't even remember what it was. Literally miles (well, not quite, but) of those thin rip strips. Little chunks of various hardwoods that I'd completely forgotten I had.

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Now to start on the other opposite wall. Looking forward to finding tools I forgot I had.

I rate the cleaning effort by the number of pencils I find, not space I produce. While cleaning up after a project, and preparing an orderly sharpening place, I found six last Wednesday. Figure there's at least forty more in there somewhere.

:) That reminds me of cleaning out the garage every few years and finding a dozen or so table tennis balls that got hit behind this, that or the other.

I love the sense of discovery!

There's only a handful things I haven't lost at least once - Table Saw, Bandsaw, Planer, and bench are about it, and I ain't real sure about the bench.

Hey Dennis,

I totally concur with your sentiments about burning up the "surplus" wood. Enjoy the warmth.

I think that I once lost the door, when I was cleaning out the dust collector, but after an hour of digging, I found eventually my way out.

Cheers,
Tom

I understand the lost pencils. I put two or 3 in several drawers, then an hour later I can't find even one. Happens with other small tools. I think my shop in located in a zone like the Bermuda Triangle.

For me it's my coffee cup. The wife wants me to put a GPS chip on it. :D

My winter shop routine

#1 light stove,
#2 wait a while
#3 feed stove
#4 wait a while
#5 go upstairs to shop, decide it is too cold, go back downstairs to feed stove.
#6 repeat until shop is warm. it is now too late to work, go inside, grab a beer wacth some tube and go to bed.

I keep looking for the "Like" button.

Great narrative, Paul!
