One of the last rooms in the house waiting it's major re-do. 13x16, not a grand space by any means. All I wanted to do is paint the ceiling; we'll be putting textured/fabric wall covering throughout on the walls.

Most of the morning spent moving out stuff, tables, chairs, etc., that would be in the way -
Over half an hour masking off windows, covering up the rest of the stuff that I could work around -
Take down the overhead light fixture -
Dig out the painting tools, roller, brush, roller tray, ... fetch the can of paint that's been sitting on the shelf for ...? -
Mix the paint, close to half an hour (it seemed)

Now close to lunch/noon

Paint the ceiling: 20 minutes at the outside!

Clean tools and put away paint, tools, ladder, etc., half an hour
Fold up drops, remove masking & plastic drops, generally clean up the mess I made otherwise -
Put furniture and other stuff back in, ....
Total maybe an hour.

Most of the morning and enough of the afternoon to render it useless for anything else for ...

20 minute's worth of painting time.

Now I remember why I hate painting.

The first 10 years of teaching I worked as a painter and never minded it. But painting MY OWN house and moving all the stuff is like torture!

I know of a young man who painted his livingroom walls and DID NOT remove the furniture, he just painted around it!
It had been pink and he painted the VISIBLE parts of the wall yellow!  :o
Took him about an hour for the whole job. When he moved there were shadows of pink where all the chairs, TV, couch etc. HAD been!

I am SERIOUS!

When I was a teenager, Mom let my Brother and me paint our room black with the condition that we would paint it back to very light beige when the time came to move.
Heck, we were kids. How hard could it be?

It took five full coats before the bleeding stopped.

Back in the early '70s, my brother and I painted the upper half of the basement rec room walls with glow in the dark pink paint  We had black lights in the fluorescent fixtures. Fortunately, the folks sold the house before we had to repaint it. :D

Back in the 2009 era my daughter painted her room bright day glow green and put round pink and orange rings on the walls. Now she moved out and I get to paint it a color that my wife wants!

I think I know that young man! Our current house was painted that way although we didn't know it at first walk through - the furniture was still in place. Then we arrived to move in and... well, you know the rest. :-D

we let my kids do the dark bedroom thing... then made them paint it over when we 'moved out'... (didn't sell, just migrated awhile).

On a related note, I've given up on having a say in what color to paint rooms in our house. :(

I've never considered myself a good coordinator of colors for such things as interior painting. Thus I stand by the old theory: 'You're always right in white'. I prefer furnishing and people to have an equal chance of dictating the decor.
