As some of you might recall, I've been planning a move to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in VA for some time now. We've been wanting out of the snow belt, but of much greater importance is that my parents aren't getting Any younger, and so I've been searching for a job down there.

got the word yesterday that I have a new job as a Photographer doing Church Directory work. It involves a Bit of travel, mostly within a few hours of Harrisonburg, with the occasional overnight stay. I'm leaving within a couple of weeks, Lori and our youngest move after the end of the school year. I'll be making several trips north/south to move SUV loads of stuff down.

While I'm waiting for them to arrive, I'll be stripping wallpaper and doing some basic painting and so forth.

more details later...

Ned

Sounds great Ned. I think you will love it there, it's a whole different world. We keep thinking we need to move to get out of this hurricane area but the thought of dealing with 30 plus years of accumulation in this house is overwhelming so far.

The Shennandoah Valley is a beautiful place. I love driving thru it.

I will be making a trip thru it again this Sept on my way to Ma. for my class reunion.
Enjoy the new job. Sometimes change is a good thing. Congratulations on the new job.

Yo'all know that moving across the Mason Dixon line will be a change in more than just the weather.

sure hope so... biggest change will be that I'll be the incredibly impatient driver behind the 'dear little old person' a LOT

Looks like you'll be near the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway - one of the great hiking and driving roads. The house looks great although the shop looks a little windy :-D

Update...

Well I'm two weeks in to the new job. And it is looking like I might be on the road a bit more than I had hoped, but that means I'll be making money. So for now the price is acceptable. Overall the job is about what I had hoped for, with the travel aspect being the only 'sticking point'. My supervisors and trainer have all been fantastic about everything, and I should be 'out on my own' soon.
Having been an on-site photographer before, a Lot of what they normally teach the new-hires is irrelevant for me. I already know about what size room we'll need, how to deal with the clients, that setting up and tearing down can be both a pain and a good workout, etc... I just got my equipment the other day, and man is there a Pile of stuff:
3 Backgrounds, a tripod & dolley, 6 light stands, 2 stools, 4 bags for the light stands 4 monolights and a 'generator (power pack)', plus props, posing stands a laptop and of course a camera... All of that has to load into my Buick Rendezvous... which I'm seriously looking to replace with a 'work' van... Probably as young/low mileage as I can find in either a Chevy Astro or Sprinter (would love the sprinter, but expect the Astro will be the winner due to funding). I have already put 2500 miles on since the 1st of the month... they do pay mileage, but that $400 gas bill was a bit of a shocker when I totaled up my receipts yesterday.
So far I've been to Suffolk, VA, Beaverdam VA, Eden NC and Lynchburg VA. This coming week I head all the way down to the southwestern corner of VA to the tiny town of Rose Hill, (my hotel will be in KY), then I've got to come back up to Bridgewater to register my SUV here... then back down to Radford, VA Lots of miles, but it is more fun than my last job, which was beginning to wear on my nerves a bit.

See you in Church!

Ned; I'll try to keep in touch, so far my plans are to leave here on the morning of 20 Sept, quick stop in Knoxville at my daughters house to drop a few things off, and then on to my first hotel of the trip in Harrisonburg, Va.
