Update...
Well I'm two weeks in to the new job. And it is looking like I might be on the road a bit more than I had hoped, but that means I'll be making money. So for now the price is acceptable. Overall the job is about what I had hoped for, with the travel aspect being the only 'sticking point'. My supervisors and trainer have all been fantastic about everything, and I should be 'out on my own' soon.
Having been an on-site photographer before, a Lot of what they normally teach the new-hires is irrelevant for me. I already know about what size room we'll need, how to deal with the clients, that setting up and tearing down can be both a pain and a good workout, etc... I just got my equipment the other day, and man is there a Pile of stuff:
3 Backgrounds, a tripod & dolley, 6 light stands, 2 stools, 4 bags for the light stands 4 monolights and a 'generator (power pack)', plus props, posing stands a laptop and of course a camera... All of that has to load into my Buick Rendezvous... which I'm seriously looking to replace with a 'work' van... Probably as young/low mileage as I can find in either a Chevy Astro or Sprinter (would love the sprinter, but expect the Astro will be the winner due to funding). I have already put 2500 miles on since the 1st of the month... they do pay mileage, but that $400 gas bill was a bit of a shocker when I totaled up my receipts yesterday.
So far I've been to Suffolk, VA, Beaverdam VA, Eden NC and Lynchburg VA. This coming week I head all the way down to the southwestern corner of VA to the tiny town of Rose Hill, (my hotel will be in KY), then I've got to come back up to Bridgewater to register my SUV here... then back down to Radford, VA Lots of miles, but it is more fun than my last job, which was beginning to wear on my nerves a bit.
See you in Church!
