Just ordered a small switch today for an ice machine that I could not find locally, the price was less than half of the others that had it. Had to fill out all of the charge card info shipping info and billing info to find out they were going to really stick to me. So I guess I broke out just about even but it still makes me MAD!

SUBTOTAL: $10.82
EST. SHIPPING AND HANDLING: $15.49 <<<<<
TAXES: $0.84
TOTAL: $27.1

Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box $4.95
That makes $10.54 for handling Can you say rip off!!!

Without a profit, there is no future for any enterprise.

How many units of that switch do you figure the company sells per year? In my state the warehouse might have paid inventory tax on that switch for years. Have to cover that, too. Not as if you can post endless annual losses like a country I'm fond of....

Daddy Gloves, That is the main reason I get as many orders for small machined parts as I do. When ever I make a part that has to be shipped I charge exactly what the actual shipping charges are. Most "commerical " companies have a flat shipping/handling charge and many make more profit from shipping the items than actuall stocking the items. Just watch the boob tube for a while and see how many items you can get:"Free, just pay seperate shipping and handling"

Sometimes it's more about the way it is represented. If the price of the switch included the costs you pointed to, and the shipping looked more reasonable, people might not give it a second thought.

I am usually amazed how small business' are able to stay open and still sell stuff or provide services as cheap as they do. Most do a good job and get repeat customers because they treat people right.

Sadly, too many of them sell below cost without realizing it. Good for the buyer, but won't pay the replacement cost for inventory or their retirement. A lot of them run through their initial capitalization pretty rapidly because of it. First unhealthy sign is often what you hear a lot about in the news - borrowing to cover cash flow for inventory and payroll rather than using accumulated cash.
