For those of you who don't know, I've started working the evening shift and will do so for the rest of my career....1 year, 10 months, 16 day, 12 hours, 28 minutes, 56 seconds and counting.

Now, this means that I'm up and around my home during the daytime hours.

11 am on every Friday is when the city of Indianapolis tests its tornado sirens. I smile every Friday when I hear it. The small towns that I work in don't have a regular testing schedule and I find I miss hearing it.

So, today I know the closest siren to mmy house does work.

What makes you smile?

Verna

Hey Verna,

The closest thing that we have around here to a tornado warning siren is a lahar warning. Mount Rainier is the largest volcano in the contiguous United States, and given the destruction caused by its smaller sister, Mount Saint Helens, it doesn't make me smile much.

On the other hand, my grandfather ran a small dairy farm right at the foot of the mountain. During trips to the farm as a child, we always drove straight at the mountain, as it grew larger an larger in the windshield of the car. It became known as "Grampa's Mountain", and for me it still is.

In Seattle, when sky is clear, and you can see Mount Rainier, the locals say, "The mountain is out." That makes me smile.

Tom

Verna,
The town I live in is ALOT smaller than Indianapolis and we have eight sirens. They are tested the first Monday of the month at noon every month. It kinda makes you jump until you check the calendar and realize what day it is!
Just about every town with more than one thousand people have at least one siren around here. I dont know why they keep calling for tornadoes? Unless they have a real chinzy trailer park they want to get rid of. :D

OH  Those aren't for calling tornadoes?? Well the seem to work because almost every time the sound the sirens, a tornado soon shows up!!!

9 years ago, I would have laughed if I heard we were getting a tornado siren. Apr. 28, 2002 changed all that. There were several installed almost immediately.

On the morning of the second day spent in the new house, it went off at about 7am. They were expecting one to touch down, but, Thank God, it never did. It has since gone off once or twice, but nothing materialized. It's going to be tested this Saturday.

Verna,

Growing up in Glendale, Arizona we didn't have tornado sirens, but we did have "air-raid" sirens and they were tested every Friday.

Take Care,
Carlos

Today was a beautiful autumn day(with out the norther hemisphere colors!)
My children were happy and had a great day in the wonderful sunshine.

Most of it made me smile quite a bit!

Good topic Verna!

Enjoy the count down, you will be there before you know it.

Oh I also went to a garage sale and bought a pair of quick release C clamps.
Made in the USA and work great. I wonder why they are not still on the market?

Still the finding and buying also made me smile. 18 dollars for four, eight inch clamps seems like good value for me.

Oh no this is turning into a stealth boast...

When the joints come together with minimal cursing... I smile.

When the kids run to the door to hug me when I get in from work... I smile.

When I figure out a new bass riff... I smile.

When the wine is awesome... I smile.

When the missus gives me that special look... well, I grin from ear to ear! :D

Some people bring a smile to my face.

They're like slinkys... they're not much good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Congrats, Verna, on your pending release from the bondage of labor! (grin)

Carlos, I had the same response to the siren thing; we had air raid sirens in the Seattle neighborhood where we lived in the early 70's. They go off on a regular basis but I forget when, exactly. Interestingly, they were still there, mounted on the utility poles.

Looking at my humble surroundings, what makes me smile is the pride I feel for what I've accomplished during my life. Two marvelous children who are successful in their own right. The peoples' lives I feel I touched and far more importantly, how so many people have touched my life.

In the present tense, I smile when my lab retrieves her toy. When I leave a pile of knee deep shavings around the lathe. A dram of Ardbeg will always get a grin of appreciation.

But perhaps the most sincere smile is evoked every morning when I hear Robbie call me for breakfast. This July it will be 48 years that she's never failed to bring me to my senses to start a new day.

When I'm driving down a 2 lane highway in the wee hours, and there's not another person in sight, I'll sometimes just stop the truck on the side of the road on a clear moonless night and being 40+ miles from the nearest town, I step out and stare into the heavens at all those stars. They seem close enough to touch. That makes me smile.

When I step into the shop and I'm working some nice smelling wood, like Lignum Vitea or Olive or Mesquete. That makes me smile.

When I walk out to the range on a bright sunny day, that makes me smile

When I step into my canoe and dip the paddle in the water for the first stroke, knowing that the pickup car is 10 miles away, that makes me smile.

Scuba diving on a warm tropical reef with gobs of colorful fish makes me smile.

Watching a 14 week old puppy playing with leaves, twigs, anything within its reach and just having an absolute blast doing it :D :D

Watching said puppy falling asleep almost in mid step because she tired herself out so much "helping" me trim bushes. (No blood was shed this time.. )

Yeah, every day should be like this

Mine's a 10-month old girl and her sister. Retired means I can watch them while grandma, mom and dad work.
