Does any one here use a laptop based GPS system?

I do not like the tiny screens and the pain programing of the standard GPS systems.

I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations?

Thank you.

I've got two different ones on my iPhone. I love the one I paid for, named Navigon. It took my sister and I right to our Hotel that we're staying in tonight in KY, without any problems.

Chance has a similar one to my Navigon on his laptop. PM him and he'll tell you the name of it. It's very similar to my Navigon. It works very well.

It's not quite the same thing as a GPS, but Google Earth (free) gives you a map showing any location simply by inputting an address.

I had Microsofts laptop GPS.
On two different job interviews out of state, I ended up in the middle of corn fields.

I got a refund, and was told MS wasn't going to cintinue any updates.

Bought a Garmin NUVI, nary a problem.

Monte,
I have used Microsoft's Streets & Trips with GPS for about 5 years. I started using it at work so I could find addresses that my techs had worked. Now we have it on my techs laptops (without the GPS). Usually it will take the techs to the correct location (we cover an area of about 150 miles by 125 miles). The only problem I had was when I was in rural Southern Kentucky. It showed me off the road by about 100 yards for about 20 miles. I prefer using the laptop version over my Blackberry version when I am on the open road. I like the larger screen, greater volume and auto re-route if you get off route. I believe it cost in the area of $75.

Unless Streets and Trips has made significant upgrades there are or at least a few issues with the software compared to a "regular gps"
- Streets and trips DOESNT TALK TO YOU...you have to look over and read
-You have to connect a USB cable Gps antenna and attach it (magnetic) to the roof/outside of your car.
- If you make a wrong turn it wouldnt recalculate and adjust the directions
- you have a $500-1000 7lb. rocket on your seat if you have to stop quickly.
- This intern requires you to buy/create something to sit on your passenger seat to strap the laptop down.

I use GPS's ALL the time since i travel eastern half of the USA for my job. It goes where i go. They are getting better and better all the time. My father inlaw has a Garmin Nuvii 255w it is a wide screen version and it is GREAT. You can tap and drag on the screen to see different areas of the maps which is newer features since the older ones. I have found that i mount my GPS on the Drivers side of my windshield on the lower corner near the dash.... i find its not near as distracting then planting it up in the middle near the Rearview.

just some of my opinions...

Jeremy

Jeremy, Chance's Streets and Trips uses the same obnoxious female voice that my Navigon uses!!! And, yes, Chance does attach the antenna to the windshield....but he doesn't lose GPS signals like I do!!!

I think he had to get the deluxe version to get the talking version, by the way.

And, Navigon just took me thru Atlanta--the smoothest trip I've ever had through all of those lanes!!

B.Betty Heh?.....i have some other affectionate names for her...LOL ..none appropriate for the forum LOL. Especially when she cant make up her mind. I actually refer to my GPS as my wife's name sometimes. LOL as a guy they are similar always talking and nagging and if i only had a mute/volume button for the wife!

I am completely joking of course and i am not afraid to say that my wife is the boss its much easier that way!....and safer!

"DOESNT TALK TO YOU"

Yes it does. Like Verna said it is a lousy voice.

Well, I sure have looked for the menu to change the voice--can't find it  And, yeah, I could handle being told where to go by Brad Pill
