I just received the message below from my granddaughter who is away at college. I got the Gigi part which is what she calls my wife, her grandmother.

<3 has always meant a number less than 3 to me, but there seems to be something else afoot here, especially since I know that her and math have a very distance relationship. Also they do not seem to teach basic English construction in college anymore........(sometimes I feel like a doddering old fellow in a cartoon.)

Apparently, I am committed to taking her somewhere the next time she is home which I am happy to do because she hangs on my arm like an ornament and makes all the other old foggie strangers green with envy. Daughters and granddaughters are nice to have.

i <3 you grandpa if you ever miss me i know gigi has my cell number & dont think you are getting out of our date im so excited for when we an actually plan it :)

XOXOX Brooke

<3 is a heart. Meaning (in this context) I love you grandpa.

Texting with proper sentence structure can lead to expensive cell phone bills.

Thanks for the interpretation--I'm sure my newphew and his wife already knew what <3 was, and Aunt Verna would have had absolutely no idea what they were talking about

Hey, Jess.....it still does mean "less than 3" to me, too

I haven't twittered since my voice broke at puberty. :D  :D

I heard a comedian say this

IF voice devices were invented after test devices, I'd call it is easier. :D

Larry, don't feel bad brother, you're in real good company here.

Gene, YES!

I think that texting while driving should be a federal offence punishable by road side execution.

I just don't see the reason for texting at all. In the time it takes to text someone, I could call them, speak in plain english and be fully understood.

Now, I can understand text messages that use all the short hand because texting with only a 10 key pad is a RPITA. What really fries my backside, is when I see the same coded messages and no punctuation on emails. There's no excuse for it when you have a full keyboard sitting in front of you.

Do they still teach typing in HS?

No, the only thing offered is "Texting to Anger and Confuse The Adults in Your Life" :D
