As I was "mowing" the leaves thismorning,I noticed something sticking up through the leaves and grass. It is obviously a mushroom but, I have never seen one like it before.
It is pretty!! :-D

See "It is Pretty"

And TALL!!
About 7" I would guess. The book says they can get as much as 10" tall!!!

Image
See "Coprinus Comatus"

It is a "Coprinus Comatus" according to Mo's book. :D He had never seen one before either and after we broke it off and put it in a plastic bag, he took it to the Nature Center here in town. They knew right away what it was and have several in their flower beds I guess.

See "Shaggy Mane is eatible"

The common name is "Shaggy Mane" and they are eatiable  In the earlier stages but this one has matured and would soon die.
I have a few in the earlier stages growing near where this one was if anyone wants to try one. NOT ME!! And even Mo hasen't desided if he is willing to try one yet and he will try almost anything twice!!

Shaggy Manes are very good if you get them picked and processed in their early stages of growth. When they get old they start getting that black inky stuff going on and they are no longer edible.

We dry ours but they must be processed immediately or they start getting "inky".

Hey Roger,

Shaggy Manes are edible, but there are also some toxic mimics so it's a good idea to check them as well.

Another thing to be concerned about is that Shaggy Manes also contain anabuse, which is what adjudicated alcoholics are required to take. It causes severe nausea when mixed with alcohol. So enjoy the Shaggy Manes with your spaghetti sauce, but best lay off the Chianti.

Hey Gene,

I was first introduced to "shrooms" when I was a child. My Mom and Pop read Lewis Carroll's, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland to me, after they decided that Disney wasn't telling the full story.

I didn't fully realize the significance of the caterpillar's gift, until I heard Grace Slick's voice singing to me, at a party. From there, I furthered my education with a college literature class entitled, "Childrens' Literature Revisited".

After my first lessons in microbiology, I decided to join the Puget Sound Mycological Society, and learned a great deal about mushrooms, particularly of the genus Psilocybe, and why I probably shouldn't be eating them (they grow wild in the lawns around here).

So now I stick to the wood mushrooms that grow in the forest, with a few exceptions like morels, and chantharells. I also have grown a few cultures of oyster mushrooms at home, which is a fairly magical experience, even if the mushrooms are not.

I love the magic mushrooms...

Especially the ones found sliced in the produce case at my local supermarket. They add that magical sparkle to my salads... :-)
