Picked the crop of MS Silver peas today. These are great for fall gardens, long pods with 15 or so peas each. Also have a row of bush type purple hulls (known as "Top Pick" here ) that will be ready in a week or so. Cabbage is starting to head, and still getting eggplant. English peas haven't started to pod yet, but hopefully I'll get a crop before first frost. Planted all this around last week in Aug.

Mississippi Silver—brown crowder type; green pea is large turning to brown seed; mature pod is green turning silvery and then yellow; large, semi-vining plant with multiple disease resistance.

We did OK with spring plantings, but the summer drought did it in finally. Just when I was clearing things out to get ready for fall planting, the rain started and aside from lettuce, peppers, and a few volunteer tomatos as things cooled off, we are reduced to the grocery store. We just finished the last of the sweet onions, but still have a few potatoes left. We've still got sweet corn in the freezer also, but it won't last till spring. I will plant more of all next year.

Just used the last of the fresh carrots myself. My granddaughter and I had a couple each as I put some into the chicken soup day before yesterday.

Went to a restaurant yesterday and had some of the commercial carrots on the salad plate. Neither of us finished ours.

Chantanays are so much sweeter.

Here's a question for you all.

I crock pot my soup, and got into a big discussion over the cook's prerogative with SWMBO. I like my noodles/rice cooked in the soup, she likes them cooked in separate WATER, so they have no taste. Compromise was cooking in bouillon, but I still prefer the real juice.

Do you add the uncooked noodles to the broth or do you add the broth to cooked noodles?

Noodles in the real broth, not the dehydrated version from a commercial factory.

In the broth of course. Is there any other way? Speaking of, Gail sometimes gets ambitious and makes her own pasta. Anyone else do this? I really like it better than the dried store bought variety, and it's really not that hard to do. :)

We were still stationed in CA, land of the trendy, so has to be thirty years since SWMBO picked one up at one of the "home" parties the wives were always throwing. Easy, tasty outcome, though the machine is gathering dust, as I just verified, in the short cabinet over the stove. Couple of old wedding presents tarnishing in there as well. I'll probably have to polish them up for the holidays.

I haven't for years, Gene, but I used my Grandmother's recipe when I did. Hummmmm, sounds like a good meal for this rainy, windy weekend

When I quit making my own the only ones I will use are frozen ones.
