it’s better to not measure and mark at all. Use the joining workpiece to establish your layout. Then, there are times when you have to measure and mark a layout. What you mark with may affect the precision of whatever joinery you are going to use. Chalk, crayon, sharp pencil, marking pen, a screwdriver or a screw or nail OR a knife. All will give you a mark to work to but as you can see the quality of the mark itself varies. The knife will give you the most precise mark you can make...... so...here is some scoop on using a marking knife.
