example of "there's more than one way to skin a cat" is a rabbet joint. All depends on the situation you're in, you may wind up using more than one way on any given project. WOOD magazine presents some ways to fab up a rabbet here.

As usual careful layout is key to a good joint, and marking cuts from the pieces to be joined is a way to eliminate transfer errors.
