My mind goes whaaaa? When I try to figure out shellac formulas. 2# flake to 1 gal of good alcohol is about my limit BUT how often I'm going to use the mix and how much at that time usually means that I have made way to much and it will age out before it gets used. Here is a guide to help in figuring the correct ratio of flake to alky so you will have the GOLDILOCKS quantity you need. FINE WOODWORKING has published the guide and the article has some interesting insights and "a-haa's" that make the point that sometimes the intuitive solution is not necessarily correct

Making a note or label for the container of your particular mix would be helpful i.e. Date mixed, ratio used, form of raw shellac used, type-brand of alky all the stuff you might need sometime for a finish repair or a companion piece finish. If you got it when you need it, well that's a good thing PPPPPP.

And this from the daily URL about a year ago.
