More dope on adhesives.

It seems to me that how much is more important than what in a glue up. The job isn't done until the joint is cured out and cleaned up. A factor in that thinking is how much time is spent in cleaning up the cured joint. If too much glue is used you have excessive squeeze out and a bunch of time spent scraping sanding and cleaning up, and if too little is used, the joint is starved and weakened, so you may wind up in a "do over" situation. A URL was posted here about using an appropriate amount of clamp pressure which also affects how much adhesive squeezes out. Too little and the joint is weak because the appropriate bond was not achieved. Doubtless the prime factor in creating good strong joints is preparation of the work pieces sorta like building a house, the foundation determines the structure.

Good article! BTW do you remember when 'THE WOOD WHISPERER' started out? He was on our site and lived just north of me. I remember chatting with him when he was setting up his first shop. Then he took a class with David Marks, moved to Arizona and soon thereafter started his blog that evolved into his very lucrative vocation.
Thanks again!

Don

I've become a strong believer in epoxies. By careful masking around the joint and judicious touchup with a putty knife before it cures, there's little cleanup and no need for much if any clamping if the joint(s) can be held together with gravity. Gap filling, in fact, too much clamp pressure is counterproductive.
