to have a tree coming down in your area, here is a thought on use before landfill. Many times the arborist involved will cut a hunk or two off a log for free so material cost can be nil. None the less, this is not a fine woodworking project but more a craftsman, return to very basics, gruntwork project. I inherited several of these bowls from my Norwegian mother in law and had seen her use them for making bread and rolls (yum ! The wonderful woman COULD cook and bake). They have been well cared for and will be passed on and used by grandchildren and nieces.

The page gets to part one and part two is on a click through close to the bottom of the text. Needless to say but if handwork and an adze and draw knife aren't for you, a grinder and other power tools can get close to the same product.

One of the greater joys in wood turning is working with green wood. Rough turn to within a half inch or so of finished thickness (thicker if it's a really big piece), allow to dry then turn to final dimension.
