A board joint is just like you. Just enough pressure to get the job done is just right. Too much pressure can cause problems soooo when you are doing a glue up, remember that. You don't have to make the veins in your neck pop out when you tighten the clamps. A nice even thin film of glue and evenly clamped tight enough to hold the joint together and in position is all that is needed. Here is a really good discussion about clamping pressure.

I know I tend to use too much clamp pressure sometimes. Once I tried an experiment by just laying two scrap pieces together with Titebond II with no more than enough hand pressure to get a bt of squeeze out. Left the pieces to cure overnight and sure enough, next day I split the boards without any failure at the glue joint. The key, I believe, is accurate machining to achieve a good even and tight fit between the pieces or the joint.
