Here are some basic guidelines for using screws as fasteners in wood.

Keep in mind the material that the screws you are using are made of. Brass, stainless, coated, hardened, and weather they have been lubricated before driving can all affect outcome. Whew, how could something so simple become so complicated? PPPPPP

One tip I read a while back for using brass screws.

Of course no one here is as heavy handed as I am so you've probably never stripped out a brass screw. So one way to avoid doing so is to use a regular steel screw of the same size to literally cut threads in the wood that will make it easier to drive the brass one. I especially have problems with slotted brass screws. Not so much phillips head.
