of materials used in 1992-1995 rehab of USS CONSTITUTION. If nothing urges you to read the document, scan the lists of timbers used with particular attention to specie and dimension. WOW?

https://www.maritime.org/conf/conf-otton-mat.htm

Of particular interest to me was an item unique I believe to the CONSTITUTION and her sisters. The "diagonals" which prevented the ship from hogging in violent situations and were not used in British ships of the era.

Hey Newtooth,

Hogging doesn't only happen in violent situations, but is a slow, continuous process caused by the fact that the center of buoyancy is the middle of the ship, the ends essentially hang as cantilevers and slowly start to sag over time.

Prior to that most recent refit of Old Ironsides, her diagonals had been removed. They were replaced during the refit, but unfortunately, the damage was done, over about a hundred years of just floating in the water. The hogging of her keel exceeded two feet over its length.

Cheers,
Tom
