But don't damage the wood and don' stink the place up. Soooo sandblasting came to mind but that might eat up the soft grain as the finish was removed. Then I ran across this.

I've seen this done several years ago at an auto body shop. They were refinishing an antique car and didn't want to pit the steel body with sand so they used baking soda. They blasted the car in an alley behind the shop and it made one heck of a mess all over the neighborhood. BUT, with a little wind and maybe a nice rain, all was well in a very short time and no EPA problems.
