Nope not the kind of workhorse that you put stuff on top of to cut it or work on it.

I guess we all have our favorites, and if you have to buy it, then poplar is not a bad choice. Personally, I prefer soft maple over poplar for secondary and jig wood, etc., mostly because it grows wild on my land. Don't use much oak, but prefer white over red. Walnut, of course for primary wood on furniture, etc. is hard to beat, unless you go for the exotics, which I haven't bought any of for several years. Cedar, red gum, red oak, and pine also grow on my property, and several others I can usually pick up for free from neighbors.

My outlay for wood is pretty small compared to others not so lucky to be able to grow their own. On the other hand, it's a lot more work when you start with a tree.
