sit quietly and decompress while carving spoons OR you could branch out and work on chip carving. Unfortunately, you need patterns and to lay them out on the work piece........ that’s or can be tedious however, when the pattern is applied then the relaxing part of the craft takes place. Since there are no complex or finely made joints to be dealt with you can put the workpiece down with the couple of knives and pick it up another time the pattern is there it just needs executing.

Sharp knives are a must , so your sharpening /honing skills will benefit and you need to beware for your fingers and maybe a leg  So relax and try another skill. Laying out a pattern can be relaxing also when you’re into it. Discipline and attention to detail make the layout go smoothly.

Hey Newtooth,

Chip carving has been on my to do list for years. I know that I'll get to it one of these days, probably to decorate my spoons. ;-)

Cheers,
Tom

TMS: My to do list needs a nudge now and then. Here is a page of images of chip carved and wooden spoons. I hope it will give a gentle push to revisit your to do list
