Plain - joining smaller stock to larger stock
Haunched - when you want to hide the mortise for a smooth appearance to the joint
Pinned - Anywhere you want to have a nice piece of accent wood for the pin or require additional support to prevent the tenon from pulling out of the mortise (e.g. on a bed frame)
Wedged - Another great opportunity for a "craftsman's accent" that prevents the tenon from pulling out of the mortise.
Through - Benches with a Japanese or Gothic influence. Gives a more rustic appearance IMHO.
Double tenon - when you want more glue surface for an extra strong joint

Hey Ralph,

I've been away for awhile, so I was unable to pitch in on this one. Can I glean any points with another six?

Foxed - a wedged tenon with the wedges in a blind end.
Stub - used to join rail and stile frames.
Tusk - a through tenon with a through wedge, often used in knockdown benches etc.
Mitered, or Lapped- the end of the tenon mitered (or lapped) to meet the adjacent tenon in, say a table leg.
Stepped - the tip end of the tenon is a smaller dimension than the base, used when the full dimension accommodates a panel but would be too wide for a case leg, as in the bookcase that I'm currently making.
Floating - or sometimes called "loose" by poor ignorant souls good for saving length on stock, or production items where the mortises are indexed by machine.

Tom
