It looks like you are using the edge of the plane as a straightedge to check the board for flatness.

Checking flatness of the timber with the edge of the plane. If the sole and side of rghe plane are flat then the wdge must be true and any light showing under it indicates high (low) spots.

Edit: Bob was posting while I was typing this. Slow fingers. :D

An easy one, Bob gets the points today 8) Using the arris of the plane to check for flatness is a real time saver. Regarding the plane, it is a Clifton No 5 - a superbly crafted tool that is a real pleasure to use.
