I think you would need four sheets of 4' x8' plywood.
If you try to split one sheet into two you will not get a true 4' length out of each end because of the saw kurf.
I will accept my sogy points via pony express if nessary. :D

OH!!!! Wait.....Were you talking about 4 x 4 foot square or 4 x 4 inches square??????? Maybe one sheet of 4 foot x 8 foot would be enough for that. And it probably would take all for it for me to get 4 pieces exactly 4 inches square anyway. :D

Also, if you're talking about MDF, it is 49" by 97" so you could get 2 out of 1. But, I guess 49 by 97 isn't a true 4 by 8, is it?

how ever many sheets I need I know I will

1. Buy one fewer than I need
2. Twist my back, cut my hand, and drop a corner of one sheet on my toe both hurting myself and damagaing one corner of a sheet in the process.
3. Once I get home I will discover that I have no room in my shop and although it only rains here every 400 days, today is one of the days it is going to rain....
4. Curse a lot, give up, and buy the completed project complete from ikea for 1/10 the price of one sheet in the first place...

Seriously though, I say

1 sheet.... however thick it is I'll just resaw it on the bandsaw (yes, my imaginary 4 foot resaw ability bandsaw)

One sheet. I would cut it with my nanobeam cutter. the cut is so thin you could not measure it with out using a super-nano ruler.

:D :D
