Less sulrface area in contact with the wood making it easier to move across (push) the wood.

In addition a vacuum can occur with a smooth sole, with a corrugated sole this will not occur.

It evidently was a marketing ploy to sell more planes and the rumor is that it doesn't actually reduce friction (though it can make it easier to flatten the sole as there is less metal to remove) You can still buy your Lie Nielsens with the corrugated soles but it costs extra-- I'd rather spend the $40 on a hock blade methinks and would hope I wouldn't be doing much flattening on a Lie Nielsen.

I recently acquired my first corrugated sole plane (an English stanley 4 1/2) but I havent cleaned her up yet so I am speaking from study not from experience.

Lawrence got there tonight...

Lots of things, like these planes, were an attempt to guild the lilly and to offer an 'improved product' in order to increase sales. The picture below is of my ancient American Stanley No 7C. In use it is no different in feel between that and my solid-sole No 7s.
