I just finished this one.
This is a replica black powder FIRING, brass, "Brook's USA" 24
Pounder barrel with a 1" bore. It's weight is approx. 16 pounds
of hand crafted brass. Length is approx. 13" and diameter is 3"
at the breech.
This firing carriage is made of oak & custom made by me
specifically for this barrel. Overall dimensions mounted is
approximately 14" wide, 19" long, 10" tall & weighs 28 lbs.

A usual beautiful work

Was any of your work used in the pirates of the Caribbean Franchise. What really impresses me, you do not strip the brass screws. How do you do that? even waxed, I get those burrs.

I don't use wax with the screws but do drill a pilot hole. I still manage to get some burrs every now and then.

So I was reading, a 24 lber can shoot a 17 lb shell and up to a pound of black powder. How/when is the shell detonated on a battlefield?

In the 1770's, an English lieutenant named "Shrapnel" developed an exploding shell that blew up over troops. It had a fuse that was ignited when the cannon was fired.

That took some exact timing I am sure. Too soon or too late would not be good.

My Dad was a WWII B17 gunner. He told me every plane in his group had one bomb on timer set an hour apart so that every hour after the initial drop there would be an explosion to hamper enemy fire extinguishing operations. A lot of his targets were refineries.

One of the theroys about Lee's loss at Gettysburg was that they were using fuses from a different than usual source ,and the shells were exploding behind the union lines. Leaving Picket's charge into intact positions rather than destroyed ones.
