A few years ago someone gave me a bunch of untreated railroad ties which I had slabbed out.
I have no idea what the wood is. It's a hardwood and has some color in it.
I used some of it to make a display table for one of my Napoleon cannons.
The top is 54" long X 25" wide and 1.5" thick. The bottom is a little less than 1" thick.

It turned out nice.

Like your cannons, it is beautiful. The steel legs should make it strong enough to hold several times the weight of one cannon. The wood appears to be maple, which is unusual for rail road ties.

Donald,
The railroad ties were three different types of wood. I think one was poplar and it did very poorly. None of the wood was dry and the Poplar molded very badly. I gave it away.
The other two are a mystery to me. Here are some pictures.
