I wanted to make a chess set ever since high school shop (1964) when I made my first chess board. I finally got the time to turn them since I am not teaching due to covid19. I made a new board because I picked up some really nice curly maple in a load of cutoffs from a cabinet shop. It cost me a gallon of cider for each truck load of scraps. It took one walnut board to make the chessboard and glue up the turning stock for the pieces.

A bit over 30 years ago, while I was still in PA, I made a bunch of chess/checker boards but since I've been in NM haven't found anyone that knew what Chess or checkers is. :-)
