I helped a friend to carry some platerboards today. When I should go home he asked me if I wanted a birch burl. In his fire wood shed he had this beast. 30-50 kg. I cant lift it. Dried many years.
Now comes the question. What can I, or should I make with it?

That thing is a beast! Think long and hard to pick a project deserving of such a specimen. Report back When you do!

Are you sure it is burl? it looks like the head of an underground mole person. LOL

Don't wait too long. A former boss gave me some nice old maple to make something with. both pieces 12" x 12". picked them up one day, termites were living and eating between the two pieces. :(

Hey Anders,

In my limited experience with burls, they can be unpredictably weak structurally. I believe the most common use for solid burl is turning, bowls etc. I think that the most economical use is to veneer. A piece that large could be sold to a veneer slicer for cash or a share of the product. You could negotiate for the opportunity to select your cut.

Cheers,
Tom
