20+ years ago my wife's mother thinned the oak trees in her yard and we had them milled and shipped out to us. I've used the lumber for various projects over the years and was nearing the end of the stash. I used the last of "granny's" oak to make trays for our six nieces and nephews. The handle sides are bent laminations - 8 layers of 1/16" material. The other two sides are solid 1/2" stock, the bottom is 1/4", floating in a groove. Wash coat of 1# cut shellac, then sprayed with water-based poly.

drstrip,
They look great!
Did you have the wood kiln dried?
Air drying trees cut into boards has not worked out well for me.
They warp horribly in spite of painting the ends and stacking properly.

DRSTRIP: Outstanding!!!! The bent lam ends are interesting. In the photo they appear to be one piece with a kerf in the middle then each "half" laid up on a separate form. How did you do that :-?

No, the wood was air dried. Just got lucky, I guess, though I've had luck air drying in the past as well.

The handle was laid up in a single form. The eight laminations are cut, sanded to thickness, then a 1/8" slot is cut on the router table. The form looks like this:

The form and some heavy steel plates are then stuck in my 20 ton Harbor Freight hydraulic arbor press. I'm done trying to do this with clamps.
