Any one have a link to any "engineering" info. on what is inside those??? I think (think that is) I have an application for a miniature version of this idea. It would only be about 2 or 3 inches long and the force to operate it just a finger / thumb force. I have (or will once school starts again) access to all the machinery necessary to do the fab. :-)
Thanks for any leads.

the obvious solution is to take one apart, but in the meantime, here's the patent (pictures and all) for the Irwin version.

Thanks. I took a pair of 3/4 pipe clamps with that sort of lock on the fixed ends and was playing with them. Finally got the idea so now it's a matter of some design and then when I get back to the school shop, some chips, and we'll see if I can make one. :-)

An update: With the Pattent pix and the help of the pipe clamps made a test out of wood and it seems to work OK. So in a month, when school starts up I'll try the metal version using "Hopefully" 6mm shaft and 1/4 inch holes in the components. :-)

Hope the pix are right side up. I rotated them from the cell phone but the previews still look upside down.

Nope. :-( How do you make them stay the rotated way?
