Although in this case, “The Man” is me.

A few years back, I managed to tear the cartilage in my left knee, while at the same time dislocating my knee cap. While I only suffered two of the three symptoms of a classic “blown knee”, surgery was required and long story short, my dancing days are over.

On days when it is difficult to walk, I’ve been using a drug store cane as a mobility aid. As you might guess, the drug store cane is pretty ugly, so I decided to make myself something more suitable for a gentleman wood worker.

I selected a piece of straight grain bubinga that was left over from Kris’ rocking chair. I trimmed it out with some silver rings, a piece of water buffalo horn, and a piece of the holly, for which I sacrificed the extensor tendon of my right thumb. But that’s another story.

A few hours on the lathe, some trial and error to get the length correct, and the finished product is ready for an afternoon stroll.

Cheers,
Tom

Very nice there Tom, looks really "classy."

Recently I have made several different patterns for a neighbor who is into hockey, but has some nerve damage in his hand and arm. 3 variations so far, all similar with different angles..........the handle on you cane reminds me of one I made out of ash.

Very snazzy...
Do you wear your top hat, three piece suit, and spats when you go out for a stroll.

Hey Monte,

I have never worn a top hat, but I have worn spats (part of a marching band uniform) and a three piece suit, although not together at the same time. I'll probably keep the drug store cane, (I've just finished priming it for a paint job) but it's nice to clean up a bit for evenings out.

Cheers,
Tom

Tom,
That really looks nice!
I'm afraid when I finally need a cane that it will have to have a sword blade hidden inside.

Hey Zulu,

It's funny that you should mention that; when I showed to to someone yesterday, they started pulling on the knob. It took me a while to realize that they were hoping to find a sword.

As a practical mobility aid, sword canes usually fall short because you can't take them into weapons free zones. If you get use to walking with a particular stick, you don't wan't to have to worry about the need to change up all the time.

Cheers,
Tom

I first read it as gentleman wood 'walker'.

Nice lathe work, Tom!

Did you buy the hardware?

Hey Dennis,
Yeah, I bought it from “The Walking Cane Company”, in Spokane.

That's just about as fine a cane as I've seen....and an heirloom from a fine craftsman to boot!
You're always an inspiration, Tom!
