Hi everyone, long time no posting. My woodworking slowed down a bit, but it may be picking back up again.

I've run into a bit of an issue with the poly now days. I'm guessing with the restrictions on oil base finishes all the formulas changed and with it the results.

I'm trying to match an old finish that I did years ago. I always used Minwax Clear Satin Poly. I bought some and put it on a test piece and it is quite a few shades lighter.

Anyone have a suggestion on how that soft yellow glow to come through?

Most likely is the old poly has "yellowed" over time.
Don't have a real solution other than perhaps using
some old poly you have.

I don't think so, I've use the poly for years and it always matched no mater how old the original finish was.

Just applying it I can see how much lighter is as opposed to how it use to look.

Hey Jeff,

Is your newer product a water based poly? Water based (low VOC) finishes are generally water white, and will never look exactly like an alkyd/poly/oil based finish. If you need to match the old finish for color, you can use TransTint aniline dyes to color the finish. It probably won't age the same way though.

Cheers,
Tom

It's oil base.

I'll look into the dyes, thanks.

Jeff, I had a similar issue recently and decided to try an amber shellac (2 coats) and mine turned out great. I guess with all the new regulations we'll just have to explore. Are you trying to match an existing project that has the old finish? Trying to post a pic from iCloud....ain't working. Anyways...one pound cut of amber shellac made just the right tone I was looking for....so much easier than dyes & tints IMHO.

Good luck and let us see what you come up with. Good to see you back!!!

Don

Thanks Don,

I have some shellac out in the shop, I'll give that a try first.
