I have an unfinished Mahogany Entry door. No overhang, but a storm door. The door is 80% glass with just 6" stiles/rails and a 12" bottom rail. What finish will give me the most protection, does not look like a bowling alley finish and also does not peel after a year?

For an oil finish try pure Tung oil.
Will probably want to do 4 to 6 coats or maybe more.
Recoat will be easy.

Or a good Poly with UV protect. Can get a satin or semi-gloss.

On the advice of the guy who painted my house some time ago I used log oil on some natural wood trim and front door. Now, I don't know how log oil compares to tung oil but my results were far less than agreeable. Keeping mind that I'm in the Pacific NW Puget Sound region with lots of dampness to contend with, what happened within about two, maybe three years is all that was treated with the log oil began to develop black mold in a bad way. Ended up washing and scrubbing everything down an applied two coats of exterior water based poly. Not too glossy (thinking bowling alley finish -grin-) and it's held up nicely for the last six years.

So before I'd go about suggesting anything for your situation I'd want to know 1) where are you located and 2) what is the exposure of the door? South, North, etc. A glass storm door will really intensify the heat on a Southern exposure.

Alan, I've used Waterlox successfully on exterior doors. At least 3 coats. Easy to re-coat when needed, usually about 3 years.
Let us see what you do!

Good Luck,

Don

Same advice TMS gave me - Deks Olje #1 and #2.
#1 is a penetrating oil - you put it on wet on wet until it won't absorb anymore. Wait three days, then six coats of #2. TMS claims it will last forever. I've had it on my doors for two years now and it looks like new.

However, it is glossy and you'll have to do something to dull it down given your remark about bowling alley looks.

Oh, it's hard to find - I got mine from Hamilton Marine.

Osmos is a good oil for exterior applications

If you wish to stain the door then go over it with this
